Pashupatinath Temple: Our first site will be Pashupatinath Temple, nestled along the banks of the serene Bagmati River in Kathmandu, which is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple has ancient architecture and tranquil surroundings, which offer you a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Nepal. Many Hindu devotees in the county visit the Pashupatinath temple to offer their prayers. Access to the main temple is restricted to Hindu worshippers, while all other buildings are open for foreigners to explore. The main temple’s exquisite beauty can be admired from the eastern bank of the river.
Boudhdanath Stupa: From Pashupatinath Temple, our journey will take us to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the heritage sites listed by UNESCO. It is one of the popular stupas among Buddhists and is located around 11km from the center and northeastern edges of Kathmandu. The stupa stands at a height of 36 meters and is crafted in the shape of a mandala. It is the symbol of peace and spirituality and holds great significance in Tibetan Buddhism. People who visit the stupa often walk around it in a circle, turning prayer wheels and saying special words as they go. Around Boudhanath, you will find souvenir shops and rooftop cafes where you can buy gifts to take back home and enjoy local Tibetan food.
Swayambhunath: Our next stop is Swayambhunath, which is also known as Monkey Temple. It is also one of the heritage sites listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Located 3 kilometers west of Kathmandu, Swayambhu Stupa sits atop a hill and is considered one of Nepal’s most sacred Buddhist sites. Legend has it that this stupa emerged naturally over 2,000 years ago when the valley was formed from an ancient lake. As the oldest stupa in Nepal, Swayambhu is surrounded by many small temples and monasteries. The stupa has unique features such as a variety of shrines and temples and Buddha’s eyes and eyebrows painted on them. You can get a panoramic view of Kathmandu from Swayambhunath.
After exploring Swayambhunath, our last stop for the day will be Kathmandu Durbar Square. It is another UNESCO-listed heritage site that is home to historic temples and palaces. The Durbar Square has charming traditional pagoda-style temples, courtyards, and a fountain. In addition, we will explore the Royal Palace, Hanuman Dhokha, within Durbar Square, which served as the residence of ancient Kings. You can spend your time in Durbar Square enjoying local cuisine.
