Everest Base Camp Trek Overview

Calling all adventure seekers! You will get to enjoy a two-week trek to Everest Base Camp. It is the heart of the mighty Himalayas. This is actually a chance to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, meet the friendly Sherpa people in their villages, and stand at the foot of the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest! 

You will crisscross beautiful landscapes, feel the adrenaline rush of crossing wobbly suspension bridges, and explore the rich Sherpa culture of the Everest region. This is basically your once-in-a-lifetime experience which is going to be more than just a trek. It is a chance to create memories of yourself up in the Himalayas.

Best Time to Do the Everest Base Camp Trek

There are two fantastic times to experience the magic of Everest Base Camp Trek.  Spring which is from March to May is a trekker’s dream with clear skies, blooming wildflowers painting the hillsides, and comfortable temperatures. It is no wonder this is a popular choice! If you prefer cooler weather and breathtaking mountain views, then autumn which is from September to November might be perfect for you. 

 

Accommodation We use during the Everest Base Camp Trek

To make sure that our travelers have a relaxing start and end to the adventure, we shall have comfortable 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. During the trek itself, we will go for cozy teahouses and lodges run by locals which will be our home base each night. If our travelers want to go with better accommodation, then no problem. Just let us know and we can upgrade your accommodation to a higher-end option.

What to Carry for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Itinerary
Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu (1,345m)

Begin your adventure with a warm welcome in the vibrant capital of Nepal, greeted by our team at the airport. After a quick transfer to your hotel, enjoy free time to explore Kathmandu or take a rest at your hotel to get charged up for our journey to Everest Base Camp trek.

Day 2 : Fly to Lukla (2804 meters) from Kathmandu, trek to Phakding (2,610 meters)

After resting in Kathmandu, your journey for the 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek starts here. Our guide will pick you up from the hotel and drive to the domestic airport, where you will catch a flight to Lukla. Experience the thrill of a lifetime as you soar above the majestic Himalayas en route to Lukla. The flight is around 35 minutes.

After landing in Lukla, we will then start our trek to another destination, Phakding. It will take 3 hours to reach Phakding. Phakding, situated at a lower altitude than Lukla, marks the beginning of a downhill trek today.

Following stone stairs and terraced hillsides downhill, you’ll cross the Dudh Koshi River via a suspension bridge. As you hike through green forests decorated with colorful prayer flags, you’ll come across different ups and downs before reaching the lovely village of Phakding.

Don’t forget the stunning mountain vistas along the way. Here, you can explore optional side trips, such as visiting a nearby monastery or strolling along the riverside. Overnight at the Guesthouse in Phakding

Day 3 : Trek to Namche Bazaar (3441 meters)

On the third day,  we will head towards Namche Bazaar, a renowned rest spot, crossing a suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi river. The trek duration from Phakding to Namche Bazaar is around 5 to 6 hours.

Trekking along the riverbanks through lush rhododendrons and pine forests, you pass Monjo and picturesque farmlands. Along the way, you encounter typical Sherpa villages and several suspension bridges, with stunning views of Thamserku, Khumung Peak, and Kongde Peak.

After steep climbs, you reach the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint. Continuing on the journey, you cross more bridges, including the iconic Hillary suspension bridge, before ascending to catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest.

Heading north, you finally arrive at Namche Bazaar, the bustling hub of the Khumbu region. Friendly faces of the Sherpas in Namche Bazaar will welcome you. You can either rest or explore, depending on your energy levels.

Day 4 : Rest Day in Namche

Your first acclimatization day takes place in Namche Bazaar, offering an ideal opportunity to rest and adjust to the altitude. Instead of lounging around, you embark on a hike to explore the surrounding areas.

Namche Bazaar serves as the main town for the Sherpa people and offers a peaceful retreat amidst the breathtaking scenery. Located at approximately 3,441 meters, this lively community provides various accommodation options and stores for trekking supplies.

With a day of rest before continuing the journey to Everest Base Camp, visitors can delve into the Sherpa culture and explore the diverse landscape while allowing their bodies to acclimatize to the higher altitudes. Take advantage of this time to relax and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 5 : Trek to Tengboche Monastery (3860 meters)

Our journey to Mount Everest takes us to Tengboche Monastery, situated at an elevation of 3,860 meters. We will hike around 5 hours from Namche Bazaar. After hiking for about an hour, you’ll reach a flat trail offering stunning views of the landscape.

Continuing along the ridge, you’ll gradually descend to the Dudh Koshi River. Crossing the river, you’ll come across a beautiful chorten adorned with prayer flags, where you’ll stop for lunch with a glorious view of Thamserku and other peaks.

Moving forward, you’ll reach Sansa, the junction of the Gokyo and Everest Base Camp treks. Following a short trail to Pungi Thanga, you’ll cross several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. Along the way, you’ll pass water-driven prayer wheels and traverse dense forests to reach the checkpoint.

Climbing uphill through dusty trails, you’ll finally reach your destination at the gate of Tengboche. We spend the night at the cozy Guest house, where you can rest and rejuvenate after a fulfilling day of trekking.

Day 6 : Trek to Dingboche (4350 meters)

On the sixth day of our Everest Base Camp Trek, embark on a trek to Dingboche, situated at an altitude of 4350 meters, which will take approximately 6 hours to complete. You’ll trek through dusty forest trails to reach Pangboche, passing by yak herds and lush pasturelands.

After a while, you’ll encounter a river, providing a unique crossing experience. Following this, the trail leads to a steep climb to a vantage point offering stunning views of Mt. Ama Dablam. Continuing, the trail gently ascends for another half hour before reaching Dingboche.

Spend the night at a  guesthouse nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayas.

Day 7 : Day hike to Chhukung Valley (4710 meters) and trek back to Dingboche.

Embark on a day hike to Chhukung Valley, situated at an altitude of 4710 meters, where you’ll immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas. Nestled in the Himalayas, Chukhung Village stands as an ideal starting point for Himalayan adventures, offering thrilling treks and the chance to conquer majestic peaks. Soak into the magnificence of the mountains and revel in the mesmerizing beauty of the area.

After enjoying the panoramic views, trek back to Dingboche, a journey of approximately 4 hours. Spend the night at a comfortable guest house nestled amidst the stunning mountain scenery.

Day 8 : Trek to Lobuche (4910 meters) 5 hours

On the eighth day of our trek, we will proceed towards Lobuche at an altitude of 4910 meters. It will take around 5 hours to get there from Dingboche. The trek from Dingboche begins with a peaceful stroll along the trail, surrounded by towering peaks such as Ama Dablam, Taboche, and Lobuche.

This trek will offer you ample time to immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Himalayas. Spend the night at a cozy guesthouse, where you can unwind yourself and reflect on the day’s adventures while surrounded by the serene mountain landscape.

Day 9 : Trek to Everest Base Camp (5365 meters), back to Gorak Shep

On Day 9, you’ll reach the highlight of your trek: Everest Base Camp, located at a breathtaking altitude of 5365 meters. After this thrilling adventure, lasting about 8 hours, you’ll return to Gorak Shep, surrounded by the majestic beauty of the Himalayas.

Upon reaching Everest Base Camp, a profound sense of achievement washes over you as you stand in the shadow of the towering Himalayan giants. The breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse leave an indelible impression on your soul.

After soaking in the grandeur of the surroundings and capturing a lifetime of memories, the return trek to Gorak Shep begins. As evening descends upon the rugged landscape, you’ll return to the comfort of your guesthouse, reflecting on the extraordinary journey that has brought you to the heart of the Himalayas.

Day 10 : Early in the morning, hike up to Kalapatthar (5555 meters) and then trek down to Phiriche (4200 meters)

On day 10, we will begin our journey to our next destination, Kalapatthar, perched at an impressive altitude of 5555 meters.

As the first light of day graces the sky, you’ll embark on this unforgettable journey, promising breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. After soaking in the mesmerizing sunrise from Kalapatthar’s summit, begin your descent towards Phiriche.

This scenic trek, spanning approximately 7 hours, offers ample opportunities to immerse yourself in the raw beauty of the Himalayan landscape.

As you make your way down to Phiriche, situated at an altitude of 4200 meters, relish in the sense of accomplishment and serenity that accompanies each step. With every turn of the trail, you’ll discover new wonders of nature, ensuring an enriching and unforgettable experience.

Upon reaching Phiriche, settle into your y guesthouse for a well-deserved rest, surrounded by the tranquility of the mountains and the memories of your remarkable journey.

Day 11 : Trek to Namche Bazaar (3441 meters)

On the 11th day, you will return to Namche Bazaar. This scenic trek, spanning approximately 6 hours, offers a chance to bid farewell to the serene mountain landscapes while reminiscing about the unforgettable moments of your adventure.

As you descend towards Namche Bazaar, take in the sights and sounds of the Himalayan foothills, savoring the last glimpses of towering peaks and lush valleys. The trail winds its way through picturesque terrain, providing ample opportunities to reflect on the journey and appreciate the beauty of the natural surroundings. You can spend some time in cafes or restaurants at Namche Bazaar.

Day 12 : Trek to Lukla (2804 meters) 6 hours.

This will be the last trek of our journey to the Everest Base Camp; you will trek back to Lukla. The familiar trail leads you downhill through the streets of Namche Bazaar, crossing the Hilary suspension bridge to Jhorsale.

Trekking onwards, you’ll pass yak herds and pastoral scenes along dusty trails, with the route winding through rhododendron-filled forests. The journey will take around 6 hours. Make the most of this day, cherishing the memories of your journey as it draws to a close. Finally, a good night’s sleep at the Guesthouse of Lukla

Day 13 : Morning Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu

Begin your day with a morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. As you soar above the majestic Himalayan peaks, reflect on the incredible journey you’ve undertaken over the past few days.

Upon landing in Kathmandu, settle into your hotel for a well-deserved rest. Take this opportunity to reminisce about the unforgettable experiences you’ve had during your Everest Base Camp trek, and perhaps explore the vibrant city of Kathmandu before bidding farewell to the Himalayas.

Day 14 : Departure

As your 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek journey concludes, our team will ensure you are dropped off at the airport in time for your flight. We trust that you’ve had an enjoyable trip and wish you safe travels ahead.
